Nu Kemet Movement Mentoring Program

What is Nu Kemet Movement?
The Nu Kemet Movement is a Christ-Centered, Afri-Centric Rites of Passage mentoring program focused on African-American youth, both male and female ages 9-18.  The program is designed to encourage and develop African-American youth through understanding their mind, body and spirit.  On the continent of Africa, Egypt was originally called “Kemet” or KMT which means “Land of the Blacks.”  The Nu Kemet Movement is a program that concentrates on the new and developing issues and concerns with African-American young people in our society and the challenges they face.

Why Nu Kemet Movement?
The Nu Kemet Movement was developed to help young African-American youth understand their place and purpose in life.  The program is designed to create a new perspective of the images of African-Americans and their place in society as a whole.  Nu Kemet looks to uncover the richness of African/African-American culture and history to help erase negative images and stereotypes of African-American people.  Nu Kemet also provides a Christian based perspective by incorporating Christian values and principles while sharing a cultural value system.  This is done so that we might provide a vehicle to enhance self-esteem in our African-American youth.

What is focus of the Nu Kemet Movement?
Nu Kemet is a holistic approach to youth development focusing on specific areas through a structured curriculum.  Nu Kemet will focus on the areas of:

Mind – Students will participate in activities and projects that promote positive thinking and life skills such as logic, reasoning, life management, self-esteem and creativity.
Body – Students will discuss human development and care for the body through understanding puberty, social behavior, responsible dating, respect for the opposite sex, and value for the self.
Spirit – Students will understand their spiritual connection to God and the world through the teaching and reinforcement of the lessons of Jesus Christ and share the links of African-American culture and Christian character, while understanding their responsibility to the world through faith.
Culture – Students will identify with African/African-American culture through lessons and activities, discovering the contributions of African/African-American people in world and American history while understanding their commitment to the African-American community at large.

What Are the Age Groups? & What is the Structure?
The Nu Kemet Movement is a program designed for youth ages 9-18 years of age.  The age groups are broken into three sections: 9-11; 12-14; and 15-18.  The Nu Kemet Movement is a seven month program of commitment (November-May).  The meetings are held on the second Saturday and the third Wednesday of every month (unless notified otherwise).  A new thematic topic will be the focus of the discussion each month.

Mentors/Tribe of Advisors
Nu Kemet Movement is led by a group of mentors called the Tribe of Advisors.  The Tribe of Advisors consists of adults that consist of ministers, educators, social workers and other professionals who have been trained and prepared for the lessons and curriculum that is shared in the Nu Kemet Movement.  The Tribe of Advisors meet monthly to discuss the curriculum and program development and implementation to better serve the youth of the program.  Advisors facilitate the meetings in teams and provide a safe mentoring environment for young people.

How do I get an application?
The Nu Kemet Movement has an application process in which we look for commitment from the youth as well as the
parent(s)/guardians.  Parents and youth who are interested can contact the Ebenezer Baptist Church office at (201) 569-1156 for further information on the application process.
