| Rev. Dr. William Marcus Small is the proud Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church of Englewood, New Jersey. Pastor Small's life journey has helped to shape his understanding and commitment to liberating ministry and a thirst to help heal God's people through a deeper understanding and relationship with God.
Pastor Small grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey and upon graduating from the public schools of that area, he attended Virginia Union University and graduated with a B.A. degree in Philosophy and Religion. He continued his education at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree. His passion for education and ministry led him to Palmer Seminary (formerly known as Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary), where he received a Doctor of Ministry degree with a concentration in Marriage and Family Counseling and Drew University where he earned a second Masters in Sacred Theology with a concentration in Religion and Psychology.
Pastor Small's love for the church and its fellowship began at the New Hope Baptist Church in Hackensack, New Jersey. Under the mentoring of the late Rev. Moses A. Knott, Jr., he discovered an understanding and significance of church life in the African-American community. Pastor Small realized the church as a family unit and continues to try and maintain the healing qualities of that family alive and relevant for the contemporary world. After acknowledging the call into ministry while in college, he was licensed and ordained at the Imani Baptist Church of Christ in East Orange, New Jersey under Rev. Knott's leadership.
Pastor Small, upon his return to New Jersey, held the position of Executive Minister at the Historic Salem Baptist Church in Jersey City, New Jersey under the pastorate of Rev. D. Keith Owens. While serving the Salem Baptist Church, Pastor Small was the Director of the Salem Child Development Center with an enrollment of over 200 children in the nursery school and after school program.
In September, 2001, just two days after the vicious September 11 attacks, Reverend Small was called to be the fifth Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church of Englewood, New Jersey. Through this union, pastor and people have worked to create a true and meaningful worship experience for healing and wholeness for God's people. With a significant increase in attendance, an additional early morning service was added along with other ministries such as the Nu Kemet Movement Mentoring Program, a rites of passage program to mentor young men and women and a Summer Enrichment Day Camp Program, which enrolls over 100 students for nine weeks. This program focuses on academic enrichment, positive youth development, and character education and team building skills that concentrates on peer interaction issues, self-esteem building and gang awareness and prevention.
Pastor Small's concentration on building ministries within the church provides opportunities for members to become active while utilizing their spiritual gifts. Pastor's Small's emphasis has always been about ministering to the larger community through the gifts of the church so that we are "Sharing Our Gifts to the Glory of God." Pastor Small has taught, lectured and preached in many different parts of the country doing revivals, retreats, workshops and seminars. He has taught in areas such as marriage enrichment, church dynamics and working relationships, singles ministries, youth activities, counseling and family ministry.
Pastor Small has been constantly active in the community and has served in such organizations such as the American Baptist Churches, Baptist General Convention of Virginia, the NAACP, serving actively as the President of the Black Clergy Council of Englewood, Teaneck and Vicinity, a board member of the Englewood Board of Adjustments, and a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Pastor Small is currently in Supervision for his license as a certified Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of New Jersey.
